xfce erroring out on install

Hello, I am new to Gentoo and trying to install the supposedly sleak and compact XFCE Desktop environment and each time I attempt to emerge xfce I get the following error. Please note I am also getting assistance from someone who has a working system with out issues.

ANY ADVICE will be great!!

Error is as follows :

runs through emerge until...
../../exports/lib/libGLU.so:undefined reference to '__builtin__new'
collect2:ld returned 1 exit status
make[3] *** [glxinfo] Error1
make[3]: Leaving directory 'var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r9/work/xc/programs/glx info'

!!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree-4.2.0-r9.ebuild.

I am hoping this is an obvious error... but any help is appreciated.

Still having issues... looks like lib/GLU.so is where it is locking up.
It says that ./exports/lib/libGLU.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link)

and then it lists all the undefined references prior to the error message I listed last time.

Thoughs?
Oh and this was in an attempt to just emerge xfree and not xfce to see how far i got.
