I am currently running Gentoo 1.4 - Linux 2.4.19-r10 with
fluxbox 0.1.13 on my PII 400 celeron..
I was using X-chat 1.8.10 wich has worked fine, but then I decided to try an unstable version and emerged 1.9.5 .. It compiles fine and I start xchat and up pops the server window and I configure my settings like usual..
When I pressed connect, I get the "Information" message:
"Failed to open any font. I'm out of here!" .. then it quits...
I know this is an "unstable" version but I'd really like to try it out.. any suggestions on this problem ?

Thanks..
Ellidi

Hi Ellidi... :o

I have accurately the same problem on Gentoo 1.4 with WindowMaker. Xchat exit with the font problem message... I think it's just a problem of configuration of Xchat to load font... may be a font path problem and possibly a symlink could fix it... The first that fix it tell it

TuTTle

I had the cannot open any fonts problem.
I'm not sure how I solved the problem, but I think this may be it:
unmask xft 2.0, the latest atk, pango, and gtk...
Emerge them..
Then put your fonts dir in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
Then run xfs (/etc/init.d/xfs start)
Then fc-list should list a bunch of fonts.
If not, try running fc-cache and then fc-list again.

You might need to rebuild xchat after that, maybe not.

That's it.

xft2 is masked atm and for a good reason, so it would be wise to leave it that way if you don't know what you're doing.

The problem is that pango can't find any TT fonts and thats basicly the same problem as all gnome/startup problem/font problem thread around. Sadly i don't have this problem and can't give an exact solution, but you should either make your truetype fonts available trough XftConfig or fontconfig. You might want to look trough some of those threads for pointers.
