Yes, in response to the lot of the gentoo 1.4 threads here's an evil spectulation thread... which features would you like to see in Gentoo 1.5 ?

Personally I would like better font handling ala RH8 (mostily FreeType 2.1.3 or higher + XFT2), ELF Prelinking in portage, parallel downloads when using emerge and the ability to download only patches instead of whole sources to save bandwidth.

That's all I can think of now..

This thread would probably be more aptly described as "future features of portage." None of them would require a new Gentoo version (that version number mostly reflects the install CD, and in the case of 1.2->1.4, an incompatable change in gcc). The XFree things would be future features of the xfree ebuilds (and all the related ebuilds).

I like the ideas mentioned so far though.

Overall smarter portage system, with something like an emerge unmerge-and-prune foo command. This would remove foo, all the packages that were only emerged because foo depends on them (unless there are other packages that depend upon them as well), as well as recursively "unmerge-and-prune"ing all the packages that depend on foo. Maybe even better would be for portage to check the possible USE settings of those dependees, and if they only depend on foo due to some optional USE setting, give you the option of reemerging it with that USE setting disabled. Probably just wishfull thinking here, but it would certainly make removing larger stuff like kde and alsa easier.

Kinda like "emerge depclean"?

Warning: some people have reported problems with that, be sure to use --pretend first to make sure it doesn't do anything bad.

Which would mean this thread should be locked, because there are a few of those threads already.

For gentoo 1.6 (since 1.5 will be a developer realease):
My graphica installer/portage frontend. It's comming slow, but 1.4 isn't even out yet

For portage:
The ability to rsync 1 package, a way to exclude packages from emerge -u world (since i don't really want to emerge openoffice or mozilla unless it has an update i need,
