Ok since this is my first time on a linux box and I'm not too familiar with all the apps I want to know what are the best apps for the following:
1) Cd burning (file and music)
2) Peer-2-Peer Media Downloads (Kazaa clone or something like that)
3) MP3 player
4) Movie player (avi and mpeg)
5) Word Processing _________________ Gentoo isn't just an OS... It's a state of mind. |

1. Arson is great for music cds. I use gcombust for everything else, maybe not the best app but I'm used to it.
2. dc_gui (for some reason it's called dc-gui in portage)
3. xmms
4. mplayer

1) gcombust, cdrdao's own gtk-based tool for audio cds, my very own tkcdrdao front-end (perl-tk and no it ain't have an ebuild - get it at sourceforge)
2) dc_gui for me too (if you have to go passive - that is probably if you are behind a firewall you can't modify the NAT tables - it's just pain though)
3) xmms
4) mplayer for the whole shebang of files, avifile's aviplay is less but far simpler to get the hang of it too
5) OpenOffice or Abiword depending on how much "fancy" stuff you want your wordprocessor to do. _________________ Need to flame people LIVE on IRC? Join #gentoo-otw on freenode! |

Just to let you know, the "best" app is usually the one you feel is the best for your own purposes That's the beauty of choice in Linux. I'm guessing that most of the people listing apps are listing their preference, so here's mine:
1)xcdroast
2)Haven't used p2p in a while, but I thought Limewire was pretty good (you can download the linux version in their website)
3)xmms
4)mplayer
5)Windows jk. I haven't had much luck with OpenOffice or Abiword. I found lyx ( http://www.lyx.org/ ) to be wonderful, but there's no filters to create *.doc file (ala Office).
Again, I reckon you'll have to try out different apps before you settle on one that fits your needs. You can always conduct searches for apps in http://sourceforge.net/ or http://freshmeat.net/. |

Sure, that's how I run it:)
You can run almost any KDE/GTK app under fluxbox, provided you have KDE/Gnome installed and configured properly. |

I love xcdroast as well. But I must be overlooking something when it comes to mp3>CDR ON THE FLY.
Which program will do that? I use Fluxbox, so anything having to do with Gnome or KDE spare me. I also don't want to burn mp3s via CLI.
Thanks. |

i use fluxbox most of the time:
1. k3b and cdbakeoven (both great kde-based apps)
2. kazaa lite with wine (for kazaa)
qtella for gnutella
dc-gui for DirectConnect
mlDonkey for eDonkey2k (until emule gets ported )
giFt/giFTcurs (openFT)
3. xmms (usually what I use)
noatun (getting better)
4. mplayer (best, by far)
xine (I like it's interface better than (g)mplayers)..
5. for word processing I use either OpenOffice or KWord
for text editing I use either kate or vim. |

1. xcdroast
2. thinking of joining eMusic
3. xmms, prefer the away it handles playlists
4. mplayer for fullscreen realvideo, ogle-gui for dvds, realplayer for most realvideo
5. openoffice even though it is slow loading and doesn't multitask well, Emacs for text _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly.
