|
|
Okay I said the one word I wasn't allowed to -windows-, hehe, soz, but my prob is this:
My dad's computer is hooked up to my cable modem with winXP (he doesn't know any better ), and is sharing the internet up to my room with my l33t gentoo box... anyway, I wanna host HTTP and FTP on my box, but I can't find one piece of software to do this... windows' built-in forwarding simply does nothing... when I had win2k I was using RelayTCP (www.dlcsistemas.com) but doesn't werk on winXP... so my question is: "does anyone know any software for winXP to forwarding ports 21 and 80 to my computer?(192.168.0.2)
PS: sorry about the OT question |

OT posts will be moved to the "In Other News" forum. Please do not post non-Gentoo questions in a Gentoo forum.
Regarding your question, XP has this capability built in -- if you buy another NIC, you can set up the XP box as a router. A better solution might just be to get a linksys router and be done with it.

or your dad, anyway!
first, you may want to check out:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pmapper.htm
(not sure if it runs on WinXP, but only a 200k download, try it and see)
not positive that's what you need, but maybe.....
on to the important stuff....
why don't you convince your dad to put something in front of that winxp box? that way you can share your cable modem the proper way. plus, it'll cut the risk way down. a google search will turn up plenty of info for you to use as ammo. An internet-facing windows box is just *begging* for trouble.
anything would be better, even one of those linksys routers. or you could just throw linux onto an old pc (486 or lower pentium will work fine).
some easier firewall distros include smoothwall, ipcop, lrp, mandrake snf......hell, even openbsd isn't too tough to set up as a firewall.
i'm not sure what your level of expertise is, but if you need any guidance, feel free to ask.
have fun |

I have an SMC router, and it is easy as pie to use, and it comes with a printer port so you can share on the network. It is very easy to foward ports and such with its web-based config tool _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |

And I told you that feature was built in to XP. It's easiest to do with two NICs, but certainly not impossible to do with one.

I have tried it over and over, incluind after formatting... once in a while it adds rules for it's MSN messenger to my box but still doesn't forward the connections. |

Actually, it does do something if you configure it correctly
I've used it -- ICS works. It's a bit of a kludge, admittedly, and I won't use it unless I have to, but it does work.
Regardless, looks like you found another solution, so sounds like this issue is moot.

No, this is not true.
Check your settings for the IP Firewall on your fathers cable modem connection.

Firewall is disabled, which should not stop it from forwarding ports (according to their help file)
klieber: from your URL:
Code: |
How to Map a Port in ICS Using an .inf File
The information in this article applies to:
* Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
* Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
|
I am aware of that "technique" in > win98, actually I used it! but winxp is diferent, it has a property page that allows you to map ports (or at least should've) |

If u do get a router, don't get a dlink. I have one and it sux. Cant porward port ranges. It might be ok if u dont want to serv aaything, ordont want to serv much(maybe u could do a web server with it, but ftp+passv mode wont work). Also u need to restart th stupid thing when u map 1 port. |
