Ever since I switched to ~x86 (and glibc 2.3), quake3 crashes after the id software logo and leaves my mouse hanged in the top left corner.

I'm using the Nvidia drivers, so I thought for a second that something could be wrong with them, but glxgears and ut2003 run beautifully.

I suspected it might be a problem with punkbuster, so I tried to upgrade it by hand but without luck.

So if any of you gamers & players have q3 1.32 & glibc 2.3, can you say if it works for you or if it doesn't?

It works. :)
I had probs with pb too.
Delete your .q3a/pb directory and try again.
Start q3, click multiplayer and 'internet' you should see a line that says: punkbuster enabled or disabled. Enable it.
After that my q3 worked as always.

I deleted my ~.q3a/pb directory, ran q3, and it crashed in the exact same way after the id logo just before the main q3 menu.

Are you sure you have glibc 2.3 and not 2.2?

Code:

*  sys-libs/glibc
      Latest version available: 2.3.1-r2
      Latest version installed: 2.3.1-r2
Size of downloaded files: 17,701 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html
Description: GNU libc6 (also called glibc2) C libary

I'm pretty sure.

Did you get any error-messages in q3 or X?

You may need to upgrade to 1.32b (linux client only release) which fixes a problem with NVidea drivers and glibc 2.3.x by splitting the smp support into a separate binary.

Check here: http://www.quake3world.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/002083.html?

for more details.

1.32b is available from here: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/linuxq3apoint-1.32b.x86.run

I removed my whole .q3a directory, upgraded to 1.32b, without luck.
It crashes everytime between the id intro and the main q3 menu, with my mouse hanging in the top left of the screen.

Since mouse is hanged, I can't copy/paste the log, so I made a screenshot of it ;)

qconsole.log is here

doh actually I had a corrupted file in one of my q3mods directory
After a rm -rf of that directory, it now works as expected.
It's weird it caused a segmentation fault even in 'baseq3' mode though
