Weird problems with emerge

Why is it that with must packages i am trying to emerge i get the following error??

if root # emerge sys-apps/vcron

I cant seem to be able to install any cron system at all :(

You had a similar problem with gentoo-sources, I see. Does the directory /root/tmp exist?

Yes i made sure it existed.
also i made sure the permissions were right, heck i even made them world read-writable.

damn this is driving me nuts :)

i export tmp="/tmp"

but heck... weird thing if you ask me.
