How do you pronounce things? Like, so you say S-S-H, or is there a way to say it? SSH was just an example. Anything you can think of, post it here and how to say it.
Not really sure why I posted this, but one of things that shows someone who's new to Linux is mispronounceing things. This can even cost you a job, easily.
Thanks!

Some of the most common I've heard people saying:
MySQL- "My sequel" instead of "My S-Q-L"
Postgresql - I've heard people butcher this one, eventhough it's just simply "post gresk"
Linux - Some people like to pronounce it like the founder's name. It never really sounded right to me (i always thought it should like like "unix"). |

The MySQL folks say it's "My Ess-Cue-Ell". As for Postgresql, see the official MP3. Additionally, Linux was related to Minix, and inherits the pronunciation thereof -- thus, 'linnicks'. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

I always pronounce the initial 'G' as 'guh' in GNU, GNOME, etc. I spell 'S-S-H'. Partly because I have to say it in Japanese, TeX is "te-kku". Some of my preferred punctuation pronounciation: - ! is bang
- @ is snail or at
- # is sharp (although octothorpe is nice in a theoretical sense)
- ^ is hat
- * is hoshi (Japanese for "star")
- ( is kako (Japanese for parenthesis)
- ) is koka (nonsense word that many Japanese geeks understand nonetheless as the opposite of "kako" - "tojikako" is correct)
- | is pipe

I once learned when speaking to the TrollTech people on CeBit, that you pronounce "Qt" as "cute". Now it's obvious for me, but I never would have guessed that before.

Sorry, I'm confused. Are you correcting me or reiterating my points in regards to MySQL and Postgresql? |

funny, i never thought someone would try to sound Linux as Unix ....i never heard it ....everybody in slovenia (or any other person i met) was pronouncing it like the founder's name
oh, one thing: vi ... i heard a lot of names for it:
- V-I
- vee (<- in slovenia)
- (and even!!) six (as a roman 6 = VI)
and another one: i've allways (except when i use the slovene name for it) called # hash _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I tend to use the following:
Linux = linnics
ssh = S-S-H
gnome = nome
gnu = g-n-u
qt = cute
Gentoo = Jen-too (obvious I know)
Microsoft = crap

Gnome = nome
Gnu = (nasal sound) u
Linux = liinucs
MySQL = may-sikuel
PostgreSQL = Postgres-kuel
bash = bash
| = o
!= no
== igual
@ = arroba
gentoo = gentu
we, latinoamericans, are very funny in the pronunciation... but a lot of the people working with computers don't use the "standart" pronounce.. for example, I've heard a lot of people in Costa Rica pronounce "Lainucs" and not "liinucs"... funny stuff... _________________ AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 512RAM CMI8739 Eth RTL8139 TNT2 64MB... I pronounce Linux as Linus does it because that's the Right Way.
Gentoo = Jen-too properly, but when I first had it it took me a while to find that out so I tend to slip back to Ghen-too (hard g) occasionally, which was my immediate assumption (I'm British, that might have something to do with it)
SQL = es-queue-ell (We had a lecturer who pronounced it iss-queue-ell which was bizarre)
MySQL = My es-queue-ell
Postgresql = I usually just call it postgres, even if that's not entirely correct
GNU = guh-noo
GNOME = nome (I know it's technically wrong, but guh-nome sounds really odd)
sh = ess aitch
bash = bash (like in hitting things, I like that )
csh = see shell (of course!)
tcsh = tee see shell
Qt = queue-tee
As for punctuation:
! = bang
# = hash (or 'shee', not sure why!)
#! = shee bang (a friend of mine got me on that, don't ask me where he got it from, I have no idea)
$ = dollar (but I still think of it as 'string' after my days of programming in BBC BASIC where A$ denotes a string variable... ah, the joys...)
~ = squidge
@ = at _________________ Your Gentoo woll sle me sodenly!

gnome = guh-nome
bash = bash
Gentoo = gen-too
gdm = gee-dee-em
xdm = ex-dee-em
ssh = es-es-H
# = pound ( silly american phones ) but now I will call it shee
! = not, exclamation point, and as of a week ago, bang
xmms = ex-em-em-es
mozilla = moe-zill-a
nfs = en-ef-es
sql = es-Q-el, my firend says it sequel, I didn't understand him when he first started talking about it to me
gaim = guh-aim ( like shooting a gun)
emacs = ee-macks
fluxbox = flux-box
kde = kay-dee-ee aka, not on my computer
vi = vi ( like in viable)
~ = tilde (like the old zdtv character, I don't watch that channel anymore...) |

Pronunciation has been a popular topic in the past. I've therefore moved some threads into the Duplicate Threads forum and designating this as the offical pronunciation thread because it's currently active and also the most generic in scope. If you are interested in seeing the previous threads here are a few links.
How do you pronounce '/etc'?
How do u pronounce gentoo?
Portage Pronunciation
The middle one has an interesting picture of a gentoo penguin puking. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

/etc ...that's a hard one
...actually it should be pronounced "et cetera" ...becuase that's what it stand's for ...8 yrs of latin are gaining back on me
...but in slovenia we pronounce it e-t-c - e being like in Emotion, t like in Timber and C like ts (that's slovenian pronounciation of these letters ...in a way )
/usr we prounounce like user
/src like source
/bin like bin (in trash-bin)
X like ix
hmm...what else ...oh yeah ...that's a funny one ... # is in slovene "lojtra" ...which means "ladder" and @ is "afna" ...which means "monkey" ....but no-one really uses these two we use # -hash or shee and @ - at _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

/etc = et - c
# = pound
#! = Shebang
! = bang
* = splat
$ = ding
/src = source
Though related to that, on all my machines I don't use src, I use swc. Been doing that since 1982 when a friend of mine was the resident guru in the computer lab.
And it seemed to always start with "Steeeeve, it Won't Compile!" _________________ -mark |

I've (most of the time, unless I'm talking to new users) always pronounced SQL as "sequel".
and Linux would be: BSD with a better interface

Its a caret, not a carrot
http://tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/hat.html
websters says:
Quote: | Main Entry: car·et
Pronunciation: 'kar-&t
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, there is lacking, from carEre to lack, be without
Date: 1681
: a wedge-shaped mark made on written or printed matter to indicate the place where something is to be inserted |
