hey,
ive been tryin for a while to find a distro that i liked, and gentoo 1.4r seems kickin. but, um. i can't get it to install. i've followed the install page intensely, but i've gotten the same unscriptable object error with both stage 2 and stage 3 tarballs. when i attempt to emerge system i get it with stage2, and with stage3 when i attempt to merge ebuilds. could it have anythign to do with the layout of my partitions?
im trying to run win2k along w/ gentoo as follows:
hda1: NTFS 18 gigs
hda2: gentoo boot 100megs
hda5: gentoo swap 520megs
hda6: gentoo root 10 gigs
im not very knowledgeable concerning booting partitions either, so i was wondering if the boot partition is going to work at all?
all help is appreciated :>

Your partition setup looks OK (and isn't the problem).

Check out the instructions in /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE and see if that gets you moving again. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

okay. i followed the directions in that file and then tried:
emerge protage
which gave me:
TypeError: unsubscriptable object
when i:
emerge sys-kernel/usermode-sources
i still get:
TypeError: unscriptable object
sniff

Make sure when you do that that either (a) you are currently in the / directory, or (b) you specify -C / at the end of the tar command line. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

okayyy i figured out the update...
the README.RESCUE file gives instructions to:
Code: | cd /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage |
when infact one should simply untar the portage-rescue file from /
i haven't gotten far past it [its downloading sources], but i didn't get the unscriptable object error when emerging.
thanks |
