I've a Ultra 5.
I tried to set up Gentoo Linux on a 10GB hard drive, it works. Previoulsy was installed a Salaris 7.
I tried to set up Gentoo Linux on a brand new 80GB hard drive (DiamondMax Plus 9) on this station. It doesn't seem to recognise the full disk. So here are my questions :
1- is there a limit capacity on suck Sparc workstation ?
2- I tried to set the Sun DiskLabel according to the disk specifications (http://www.maxtor.com/en/documentation/data_sheets/diamondmax_plus_9_data_sheet.pdf) , it doesn't seem to recognise it properly (after format, only 7.5 Gb). But I don't know if values I entered were correct since it asks for numerous parameters. If you have some idea...
3- If I install Solaris on this hard drive in order to format it and then install gentoo linux, might this works better ?
Thanks in advance for your help...

I've had problems with Maxtor and UltraSPARC 5 before (although under Solaris 8 ). I actually had to lie about the geometry to get it to work. Sounds like what you're experiencing. Plus after I got it work there was a spectacular crash a few months later! I'd recommend getting a Sun supported drive. YMMV. |

The limit is a bit over 120GBytes. Note that you can get away with not using a sun disclabel so long as all of the following are true:
* You're not going to boot off the drive
* You're not going to access the drive from slowaris
* You include the relevant support in your kernel |

Does the default gentoo kernel for sparc has this "relevant support" ?
Anyway, thanks for the help all |

the default kernel config is ...bizzare... dont trust it to have anything you might want at any given time. always always go through by hand and make sure the file systems you want (ext2 ?) are supported et all. _________________ -Tim Smith |
