apparently mplayer now has sorenson support in the official release.... so, one has to wonder, when is it coming to an ebuild near you?

Well, mplayer now has Sorenson v3 support sort-of working in their current CVS tree, where it requires some Windows DLLs and Wine hacking to get working at all. So yes, Sorenson kind of works, but not really. I suspect you'll probably have to wait until they do release an actual version, though CVS ebuilds are not unheard of. :) Older Sorenson codecs, however, are in the current versions of Mplayer, and the version that Gentoo emerges can handle it, so you can watch older trailers and quicktime movies (though without sound).

Oops... We did it again :) So you can play your favourite brand-new quicktime movie trailers with mplayer! Oops... you cannot yet... at least the code is working, and was uploaded to CVS, but it needs some hacking to get it work... (not so bad, you need some DLLs from QT5 player and sdk, and libwine from wine-20020310 and some config.h editing) - okay, we'll work on getting this more user-friendly... :) so be patient, it'll be available in next (pre)release for sure!
Looks like I'll have to get wine working... better than nothing I suppose.

I suspect that Wine itself isn't really required; just some Wine library for parsing/talking to DLL files. I presume that when they create an actual version with the Sorenson v3 stuff built-in, they probably won't have a Wine dependency . . .

I agree with n0n- you probably don't need to have wine up and running for sorenson to work. It sounds like mplayer just needs a wine library, not a fully functional wine installation.
