I inherited another Sun Ultra 5 for parts and on start-up when i go to boot from CDROM, i get "firmware password" and of course i dont know it :(
I tried the quick n dirty trick of removing the nvram while the system is on to blank it several (like 20!) times and it still isnt blanked? Is there any other way to clear this thing off?

DrFishstik,

If the NVRAM is a FLASH memory chip, removing it won't help. If it is a CMOS memory, kept alive by a seperate battery, you may need to keep it powered down overnight.

Some older combined CMOS and RTCs had the battery included in the package, so you can't beat them either. Do not be tempted to open one of these. The batteries contain Lithium, which will catch fire if it comes into contact with the moisture on your skin.

If you go to http://sunsolve.sun.com and look up the manuals for the Ultra 5, you can enable the NVRAM chip to be written to by setting a jumper. Then you might be able to blank the password by holding down the Stop and N keys while the Ultra 5 powers up.
