This thing emerged fine, even worked including multiple windows and tabs - ONCE!!!

since then (this first onetime occasion) it doesn't work / doesn't load.

I've even rm'ed the .mozilla from ~ to no avail, it recreates it with the same grim consequences...

Does it even spit out an error? maybe route the errors to a text document. Like so if I believe

Code:
mozilla 2> mozillaerror

On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux?

first of all it does not spit out anything, when run under console it simply "hang" (well, ^c stops it and return to the console).

never the less I've tried it, and, naturally, the outcome file was blank.

I (now) have no doubt it is not related to the ~.mozilla configuration files as when I delete them - in the next run the disk grinds a few seconds (actually a lot of seconds) - most certainly for their recreation.
When the files are there it simply does nothing (when run from the GUI) or hangs the console (as if it's running - when it's obviously not) without doing anything at all.

Make sure you *really*haven't got any instances of mozilla or mozilla-bin running. Run top and kill any you find. I've experienced this too and it's always been because I have a load of failed mozilla processes running...
