I am Step 9 in installing Gentoo and have reached an impasse...

I "CD" to /mnt/gentoo and download the appropriate tarball to "/mnt/gentoo", using the command from the guide.

When I try to tar the file:

tar -xvjpf /mnt/gentoo/stage3....etc.....bz2

I get a file not found error. I have checked and double checked the syntax of my command and it all checks OK.

Even using the "TAB" trick to find the file won't work. I "CD /mnt/gentoo" and "DIR" and see no tarball file., which I should, right?

What am I missing here? Any help is appreciated!

type 'mount' and see if there is a partition mounted to /mnt/gentoo

you have to mount it before you download the tarball.

Yep... it is. At least that's what I think this means :D

/dev/hda4 on /mnt/gentoo type reiserfs (rw)

Hmmm... any ideas?

I'm using the command from the install guide...

env TMPDIR="/mnt/gentoo" lynx ....URL from guide...

It connects and gives me the list of tarballs. I select the Stage 3 for Pentium 3 and move right arrow for the download. It takes a few mins to DL the 86 MB file. and then tells me it's complete. I quit the ENV app and return to command prompt. At which point, I "CD /mnt/gentoo" and attempt to tar the file.

I can't for the life of me see anything wrong, but still cannot find the file in the /mnt/gentoo directory.

BTW, thanks for the quick replies.

when lynx finishes downloading a file it brings up a Save to disk dialog. you need to do that, then accept the filename that it displays before it gets saved, you're probably not doing that.
