Wine makes PCM sound level goto 100%

When I launch wine, it turns my PCM volume all the way up.
I have attempted to look at debug info, but to no avail, most of the debug vars that I have tried don't output anything, and using the +all crashes wine alltogether.
I really don't want this to happen.
I have been searching thru comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine for about an hour, and around the gentoo forum for abour an hour and thru the winehq help files as well. I can't find any way to fix this.
I am running wine 20021031

Any ideas?
