Gentoo is great, but I'm studing hard, and I need a computer that "just works"(tm) and I have no time to recompile, reinstall and reconfig - so I'm sad to say I traded down and installed Mandrake 9.0.

awwww, dat's sad. But I know what you mean. I was seriously tempted to go with Mandrake 9 for a while when things were going rough, because I needed a good working development and graphic design environment. (I decided to stick it out, though, because work has been a little slow lately and I've had some free time to throw around

) Hope you come back to the Gentoo community when things get a little less busy!

I installed version 1.2 back in March and it "just works(tm)".

I'll stick around and I think I'll install Gentoo again when I have time and when Gentoo is more mature.

Hell what did I shell out all that cash for my Gentoo T-Shirt for... picking up the Linux using honey' of course... no wait.. the gf would kill me if I did that,,,

The reason I use gentoo is because it "just works (tm)", and it just works for my system, compiled and optimized for it. Sure it takes a little longer than just rpm -i, but its worth it in the end. Good luck with Mandrake, and don't stop visiting!

I have used Gentoo on my main production PC here at work now for months and never had a problem that was so bad that I couldn't do my work.

Just don't install all the latest and greatest (err... maybe not so great if it's not working), just keep the things that are working.

Ahem, and btw, you will have more problems running Mandrake when you want to install a "New and Improved" version of a proggie since the RPM dependency circus is more like hell than anything else.

I personally use Gentoo at work as well as at home - and have no problems.

I think one reason a lot of people get into trouble is that they "emerge -u world" too often. I installed 1.4_RC1 on my work machine a couple of months ago and I have NEVER updated world.

Why?

Because like the poster I need a machine that just works - and right now it "just works" so why upgrade? That said I have updated major portions - such as KDE (because I was running into some bugs in KDE).

If you just let Gentoo sit after you install it then it will function just like Mandrake (only it is customized to your system).

For me i can say....i changed to Gentoo due the s@cking Mandrake 9.0

and now im really happy about a rockstable for desktop works
usuable Linux , after a look to red hat 8 .

Ok , its faster to do a "urpmi whatever" but mostly there was an issue , so
i really couldnt use the program.

I say NO to mandrake now.
I believe its better to sit there 1-3 days while i emerge my system as to
install it in 3 hours and spend the rest of time with unfinished programs.
Btw. without rpms from textar, its really a poor distri.

The other thing is, i get applications under gentoo which one u see in the
next- nextcoming Mandrake..hehe

All distributions i tried was overloaded with things i didnt want except
the red hat8 but there i had some other problems and too its solid.

Maybe other dont have any problems with mandrake , but i know ,that
im not the only one

. 9.0 isnt the quality like the ones before and the
Mandrake forum is the ugliest i've even saw.

In short words .. "Gentoo rocks"..( and im old :s) hehe
Take attention , that i only talk about my experience.
Do whatever u want.

Yes yes, Gentoo rocks, but it's also just to damn easy to break if you're me. Emerge is a handy tool to upgrade your system, but there's always that little flaw and finally you cave and install another version of some library to fix it, and BAM there goes X.. leading to yet another 1 of compiling, the last few days I've recompiled KDE more times than I care to count. Gentoo simply isn't mature enough yet for me.

Also I fail to see any progress in releasing 1.4 and resuming normal development, instead the freeze has gone from a hard freeze (remember when version bumped packages where masked...) to a sluggish freeze - it simply seems that the developers don't really know what they want.

Another reason for going to Mandrake is that 9.0 grants me a KDE that's just as fast as Gentoo's but far more stable. See after using MDK for a while I realised that most of the speed we Gentoo users claim to get is only in our heads, Gentoo really isn't much faster than the newest generation of distros out there. So I don't really see any reason to compile from scratch anymore, other than the fact that Portage is a great way to handle installation. Guess what for binary packages, urpmi is fine to it's not as good but it's just fine.

After myself using mandrake 8.something, I liked it, but too much fluf for me.

Hope you have fun pickin up the linux chicks in your hot Gentoo t-shirt. My gf likes my Gentoo T-shirt, everyone should get one :mrgreen:

come back when 1.4 "really" comes out! or when you have less studying.
A little bit of advice, taking 12 credits makes ones time with gentoo easier, also some JD works well

lovechild ...i would say something in the other direction: maybe you're not mature enough for gentoo (in the linux way) ...gentoo is mature enough, but a lot of users aren't mature enough for it ...i know i had a lot of pondering to do to finally make the decision to migrate to gentoo (and that from 4 yrs of slack) ...so, just let yourself a little time and install it when you feel like it
