|
|
I got this problem with the boot loader grub...
All is mounted (all that the install manual says should be mounted)
chrooted etc. is done.
First some info about my pc:
1,2ghz amd tbird
768 sd ram
1 - dvd (on secondary master)
1 - cdburner (on secondary slave)
ALL DISKS IS ON A HIGHPOINT RAID/ATA-100 CONTROLLER (NOT RUNNING ANY RAID)
1. - 45gb hd Partitons:
unallocated space
extended (START)
linux ext3 (boot partiton) (/dev/hde5)
linux swap (/dev/hde6)
linux ext3 (main linux partiton) (/dev/hde7)
fat32 partition
extended (STOP)
fat32 partiton
2 - 45gb hd linux ext3
3 - 60gb hd ntfs
(and NO, I dont got three 60gb harddrives, its just that its listed as number three in the raid controller)
This is what I did:
Code: | grub> root (hd0,4) (since my to first devices is a cd-rom and a dvd-rom, and my "linux disk" is the first hd it gets (hd0,x) in grub. Right?)
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded.
Succeeded
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,4)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... succseeded
Done.
grub> quit |
(it looks like this)
Code: | default 0
timeout 30
splashimage(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title= Gentoo Linux 1.4_rc1
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hde5 (boot partiton) |
Then I type "exit" to be able to type "reboot"
Booting... finding disks.. etc.
Code: | GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 21 |
Does anyone know whats wrong, ive been sitting here for like two days (and nights) getting tired .. tried to ask ppl for help on irc, but there isnt that much help to get..
So if anyone knows whats wrong, mistype in the config, what ever... anything will be appreciated..
Greets from nle
PS. Ive typed "emerge lilo", but it looks like its "emerging" an whole lot of different apps too... why is that? Well.. im going to bed now.. so I hope the lilo thingie is done by tomorrow.. nite all _________________ blablabla.. jeje.. |

OK, my guess is this is probably your problem. Depending on your BIOS, your boot partition (/dev/hde5) may be inaccessible at boot time because it's too deep in the disk. Try creating a small (20MB is plenty, unless you're going to be compiling your kernel a lot) partition at the top of the drive. Make that your /boot partition.
If that doesn't work, it probably means that Grub has a driver issue somehow with the RAID controller. (In fact, that fits in better with the Error 21, which is Grub's "I can't figure out why it failed" error.) That may be a hardware issue, so you might want to try cross-posting in the hardware forum.
Just a thought.

Bios is not a likely candidate anymore, and I though grub supports booting with cluster >1024 etc.....
Raid is far more likely, but I don't know (I ain't a lucky owner ).
Maybe lilo supports raid better I don't know try google raid+grub / lilo
btw. I just do
root(hd0,4)
setup(hd0)
and everything is set up. (menu.lst is now called grub.conf, but that ain't the problem).
Hope you fix it.
