Now gentoo has been split into stable and unstable branches, so before you install if you want the latest and greatest packages you need to read the following:

Code:

A new feature has been added into Gentoo's Portage system which allows users to choose from stable and testing/unstable packages in the portage tree. For users who wish to opt for stable packges, nothing needs to be done. For users interested in testing the unstable packages (and reporting to us via our bugzilla system), please make the following addition into your /etc/make.conf file:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~arch"

where arch is your architecture (one of: x86, ppc, sparc, sparc64, or alpha).

Worth a wad of gum for a while.

This is a really nifty feature 8)
However: I wonder: is this reversible?
can you revert your system to the 'stable" branch after playing with the unstable one for a while by simple removing the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS-flag, followed by an emerge -u world?

Second thought:
would a separate category in the forum be suitable for "unstable", like there's been a separate category for gcc3 a while back?
If this, it will be very difficult to search for solutions to your specific problems, or specifically discuss any "unstable" issues.

I must admit I was a bit gobsmacked to read about such a (seemingly) important and excellent feature in a couple of lines on the headline page!! I mean, could the Gentoo folks actually elaborate a little bit about just what this does? :-)

My guess is that it allows the installation of masked packages without editing the packages file... but since the announcement made no mention of emerging, or masking, or ... I don't really know.

Surely to goodness this sort of feature deserves a few lines of decent documentation, particularly given that the docs are generally so good for Gentoo?!?

Edit: Just found another thread with someone who's dug up some more info - still somewhat hazy, though: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=19270&highlight=

When I tried to follow the link, the post it referred to didn't seem to exist.
Anyone more info?

Lion, At the mo' I simply can't (re)find the forum posting I was linking to... Very confusing. I don't normally hallucinate before lunch - it was a post with a reference to a post to the gentoo-dev list, and quote of that post... I'll keep looking... :-)

Well, can't find the forum post, but the original gentoo-dev post was:

Quote:
Hi All,

Pursuant to the recently announced news item, (and many of you probably
already know), we have ~arch KEYWORDS in many ebuilds. The purpose of
this is to allow a stable "profile" for each architecture, without letting
package versions go ridiculously out of date. So, basically, new packages
will (once the freeze is lifted) and updated versions of current packages
(with the exception of critical and security updates) will get tagged with
~arch for the architectures upon which they were previously marked.

For those of you who are adventurous (yes fans of bleeding edge, I know
you're there, I can see you), please put:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~arch"

(substitute arch for x86, ppc, sparc, sparc64 or alpha, depending on your
hardware platform) and test away. Please report bugs etc so we can have a
relatively updated stable profile too :)
