|
|
I am having trouble with X.
Code: |
root@localhost X11 # xemacs XF86Config
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
X server not responding
: ":0.0"
root@localhost X11 #
|
I'm not sure if X is running or not (I'm in KDE, so does that mean that it definitely is?), but here is output when i try startx:
Code: |
root@localhost X11 # startx
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: uname: command not found
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Yesterday was the first day that I got X and KDE running, and I think they changed some settings somewhere. My path env var was changed, so I had to add the X bin directory back into the path. I'm not sure what else is different though. Any ideas what's going on from these error messages? |

I meant to post this in the "startx only as root?" thread, but must have hit new topic by mistake. Sorry... |

If KDE is running, X is running. Does the user that started KDE have an .Xauthority file in their home directory? If so, copy that file to root's home directory and you will be able to run X programs as root. Alternatively, what I usually do when needing to edit things as root in an X terminal window is just to use "xemacs -nw", which doesn't try to spawn a window.
You can also use "xhost" to deal with this issue, but I am not a big fan of that approach for security reasons. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Thanks a lot. Copying the .Xauthority file solved the problem. I did know about emacs -nw, but was unsure why X didn't seem to be working from root (and it did yesterday, before I installed kde). Thanks again... |

One more note - you will have to repeat this step each time you restart X. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
