Hi.
Once the gentoo install is complete, upon reboot, a checksum BIOS error appears, prompting me to enter setup. Entering setup shows the system time is roughly 12 hours off. (I know this is a known issue) So I set the system time to the "actual" time , save and exit. Rebooting the system stops at the checksum error again, though I hit "resume" and I can boot into Gentoo.
I have edited rc.conf and changed CLOCK="UTC" to CLOCK="local".
Now my system time and gentoo time seem to be accurate.
However my system still, consistently boots into a checksum error.
These checksum errors only occur with gentoo. Ive tested in redhat, mandrake and windows, the checksum error does not occur.
System = HP 600 PIII Celeron
512 RAM
Gentoo 1.4 RC_1 |

The Checksum error, itself, is
0251: System CMOS Checksum BAD - Default Configuration Used.
What other settings in the bios or cmos does gentoo touch, other than system time? |

I don't know if this will help, but I did have a similar situation before, and it was due to the overheating of my computer. You may want to check that all your fans/heatsinks are securely fastened. |

Post-installation issue, moved from Installing Gentoo.
Does turning off your system for a few minutes help? As Gentoo compiles alot of stuff, it puts more stress on your hardware than will other distros. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Take a look at my post here. One of the "other problems" I was having is sometimes, randomly on reboot I was getting BIOS checksum errors. If I let the system "cool down" they would go away. That problem also disappeared with the underclocking I mentioned. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Honestly, I've never had any heat issues with this system before. Sometimes I'll leave it off all night, boot the next morning yet the error still occurs.
Usually this type of bios error indicates changes made to the bios, causing corruption and/or the cmos battery needs to be replaced. I've replaced the battery, the bios "looks" find except for the system time drift.
I've installed redhat, mandrake and windows, on this system. With each OS installed and configured to run as a normal workstation desktop. With each OS I have allowed this system to remain active for at least two days. It has only been 6 days in total trying to reproduce the issue on other OS's, replacing the battery, etc.
Noticing the time drift, I make my changes to the time in the rc.conf file to "local", save the changes, make the time correction through the gentoo desktop (KDE) and reboot the system. Once the system reboots, the checksum error occurs. I then access the bios, noticing the time is roughly 12 hours off, I make changes through the bios directly, changing the time to my timezone (US, Pacific)
The error still occurs. Maybe its just coincidence and my hardware is about to fry. My next step is to flash the bios, with an upgraded version and try again.
Thank you all. |
