Installed OpenOffice the other day. Seems really slow, as in, pretty much unusable. I'm running a Slot A Athlon 750Mhz.
Has anyone compiled OO with a similar system? Before I try, I'd like to gauge if speed would improve enough to matter.
Wasn't there something called SOT based on OO? I'm wondering if they've done any optimizations.

maybe it depends on what type of java runtime you have installed?

I'm running OOo 1.0 too and no problems (I've installed it from the binaries from OpenOffice.org)

It takes me only 4 seconds to start Writer on an Athlon 1GHz -256Mb ram with the kde's quickstart applet from http://segfaultskde.berlios.de/oooqs/ (with a tricky workaround for the problem mentioned in that website)

BTW: Just for the curious there's the trick: put this in the /etc/X11/Sessions/kde-3.0 file before the /usr/kde/3/bin/startkde
statement:
Code:

   killall ooqstart
   killall soffice.bin
   sleep 1
   rm ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc.orig
   mv ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc.orig
cat ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc.orig | grep -v OpenOffice.org > ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc

Sadly this code doesn't resolve the problem at all. (only if you always start the applet --with the "quickstarter-feature" enabled of course-- at every kde session)

Regards

Thanks for the suggestion lunatc, but I don't use KDE. Perhaps SETI is interfering. Though nothing else seems to have problems.
I'm guessing startup is 15 seconds or so. After that, text seems to lag behind my typing once in a while. Menus don't seem very
snappy either. As for Java, I'm pretty sure its the blackdown variety. I tried IBM's JRE first, but it wouldn't emerge.

Thanks for the input.

I've been running OO with P4 1.4 under Fluxbox and it has been running great. So far I'm very impressed. Not that that helps you, just sharing my experience
