Has anyone tried a chroot-ed install of ppc-gentoo from within OS X?

Would this work? If it wouldn't work right out, how much work would it take to modify portage so that it would work within an OS X environment?

I'd like to try out OS X, but I'd really miss portage/emerge. I'd want to continue using a lot of the open source software that runs in OS X, but I don't want to go back to manually downloading and installing it.

Hey SeJo, any way we could be of service. Between Fink and resolving dependancies by hand, I feel the need for Portage. I should be getting tonnes more time now that school is winding down and I would love to help.

I would love to help out as well. I have been using Fink and Gentoo for a while now, it would be nice to see Portage on OS X. Also, it is possible to bypass Apple's Quartz environment completely and run X11. I have done it and set up gdm and it worked beautifully.

I seem to remember an old hack involving single-user mode (login as <console, if I remember correctly) but that was back before Apple released their own X11.app - this used XDarwin. Might not be the same as what pat2man's talking about, though.

Just run X11.app and under Preferences there's a setting for full-screen. :-D

Full screen is great but sometimes it is nice to get rid of aqua, strip everythign down and just use X11.
You need XDarwin, not Apple's X11 because it only works withing Quartz. If anyone wants detailed instructions let me know, PM me or aim: patman9156

mjolner, and others

We are indeed in need of some people lending a helping hand. Right now we are to much occupied with gentoo on ppc to even get really busy with osx. I was going to try to to it as my thesis, but seemingly my professors don't want me to do it (reason: they know shite about linux/mac osx/python and are complete utter morons)...

i'll talk to pvdabeel asap and see what we can work out... sorry i didn't react faster (exams, work etc...)

greetings

The trick to getting rid of the window server is to edit your /etc/ttys file.

The following lines are the biggest hint:
Code:

#console        "/usr/libexec/getty std.57600"  vt100   on secure
console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow" vt100 on secure onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"

You want the first one which will give you a terminal login. You can then install xdm/gdm/kdm (I ported gdm to fink but it is outdated by now) and you should have a nice graphical login.[/code]

Great! Now if there was a way to use carbon/cocoa apps in X, I'd be set!

Why would ANYONE want to run OS X with X11 only? In that case Gentoo is far better (much, much, much better console, filesystem [I use xfs], GNU apps etc.). OS X without the GUI is, well, IMHO worthless. Why would anyone seriously be running Darwin if he could run Gentoo, Debian or YDL? Don't tell me because of Mach ...

It would be nice to bring portage to the Mac.....I'm sure if some people would like to get together and try to port portage we could all do....I am thinking of running a Cocoa frontend for portage so people can seeminglessly install apps like Fink.

I already sent an e-mail to sejo@gentoo.org regarding my willingness to help with gentoo/osx. I have gotten no reply since I sent it on 2004.05.25.

Who else do we contact? Let's get this party started!

For everyone willing to help:

Get me (and cc sejo@g.o) a small email. Provide us with a some background (programming language knowledge, what version of osx you're running, whether you know cvs, ...) , ...

Use the following quiz: http://dev.gentoo.org/~avenj/ to test your current portage knowledge, it might come in handy.
