Kernel Configuration: Creating an efficient Kernel

Yet another that's been bitten by the tweaking bug

One of the things I have found on my various ventures. is that most linux boxes I have played with, feel slow, unefficient, and generally not well laid out.

From my experience, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong, is that a well configured kernel is essential for optimum system performance, as if something isn't setup right, you'll start to notice it later on.

For those looking for an easy way to get themselves a kernel setup, just run Genkernel........it builds a basic kernel, mainly meant for those of us that feel uneasy about making our own.

Yes it can be hard building your own kernel for the first time, even I found it hard myself. But as long as you take close watch of what the Gentoo Handbook mentions is needed to boot the system, you should be fine. Also reading the help section when compiling your kernel can help, as it allows you to detect what you might/might not need for your setup.

It's one of those things that when you finally find the right combo, you should back it up somehow to a floppy or USB Thumbdrive if you can, so that anyone you come across with similar configuration to yours can use the same kernel as you.

And all those times when I used to watch Genkernel create my kernel, fail, edit options, fail again.........I got sick of it. That's what drove me to making my own, now I've mastered making them .

If in doubt, ask a friend who might be adept at making them to do one for you, or to teach you how to do it. It's a skill worth knowing, and a skill worth sharing.

If anyone else has tips on how they built their kernel, or how to reduce things loaded, please add any thoughts/suggestions.

Hm. Don't really get the feeling that post gives anything in the war of Documentation, Tip or Trick. Only thing in the way of tip is to manually compile your own kernel. That tip is already in the documentation handbook.
