Okay, I have been wrestling with this problem for nearly half a day and exhausted all possiblity that I'm trying to get this going.

Basically, I just want view my truetype fonts. It works before on X4.2.0-r12 where I can get some graphic works done in The Gimp with TrueType fonts. Theming for GTK using TTF as well etc.

A long update was needed and I've noticed X4.2.1 was in the process. So all that went ticking in etc.

First problem came up:

Code:

/etc/init.d/xfs start
* Updating FC cache ... [ok]
* Scanning font dirs ... [ok]
* Indexing font dirs ... [ok]
* /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype...
/sbin/runscripts.sh: line 108: 3499 Aborted     /usr/X11R6/bin/ttmkfdir -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir -o ${x}/fonts.scale -d ${x} >&/dev/null               [ok]
* Starting X Font Server ...  [ok]

Oh dear as I thought, looks like I'm going to have some truetype fonts problems today...

Looked in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. Fine.
Looked all over the system.. Fine.

Why I couldn't view my truetype fonts is a mystery. I even ran ttmkfdir in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype and frankly it 'aborted' which was a first.

Why am I getting all this hassle? :roll:

Back to X4.2.0-r12 for me.. I should probably file a bug report but need to see if anyone else encountered this similar situation. Seems that X4.2.1 was rushed into Gentoo too quickly?

Hope I get some answers soon :)

did you compile x with use="truetype/freetype". Its freetype OR truetype, dunno if you can use both though, check in the xfree ebuild to find out. This will also pull the windows truetype fonts and extract them into the appropriate directory. Good luck!

Truetype is specified in the ebuild and I remember it downloading and installing MS TT fonts when I emerged 4.2.1.

When I execute "/etc/init.d/xfs start", the only verbiage I get is
* Starting X Font Server . . . [OK]

How do you get the "Updating FC cache, Scanning font dirs", etc?

I don't receive any errors when I run ttmkfdir in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype. Just output like:

807
ariali.ttf -monotype-Arial-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-adobe-standard
ariali.ttf -monotype-Arial-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0
ariali.ttf -monotype-Arial-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-fcd8859-15

Did you trying running "fc-cache" in the truetype directory first before "ttmkfdir"?

hmmm, I get that problem too. It's happened since 4.2.1 too, or more specifically gentoo 1.4 4.2.1. Perhaps it's a gcc 3.2 problem?

:?

nempo: I did try USE="truetype" earlier today and that didn't really work :/

ejwahl: it was already like that when I've installed X4.2.1 =) However, I've just downgraded to X4.2.0-r12 because it works (tm).

[smeagol]: I'm running 1.4 as well. I don't possibly think it is GCC3.2 related?

Hrm.. wish I never actually bother about the entire idiotic thing. ttmkfdir is refusing to sort out fonts in /usr/X11R6/libs/X11/fonts/truetype

I'm fedup with this... why things just have to go wrong of all today :( Thanks to this hassle, I have lost a day work :(

I'm locking this thread in favor of the grandmaster XFree 4.2.1 font problems thread. If you can't find a solution to your problem there, feel free to repost your messages in that thread.
