large install - unpacked file locations

I have an install of gentoo running in vmware. It works great. However it is taking up a lot of space. I am wondering is there anywhere I need to clean files out of. Like the unpacked source files. One place I have found us /usr/portage/distfiles.

one other dir is /var/tmp/portage
