Hey all,

I have been using gentoo for a while now and it been working great. Recently I built a p4 box and decided to install gentoo 1.4rc1 on it. However, everytime I boot off the cd it hangs:

Uncompressing Linux.... OK Booting kernel

Then nothing. I know the box works well because I have been playing wc3 on it constantly for the past week using win xp. I have tried using the 1.2 boot cd and it crashed as well.

My specs are:
P4 2.26Ghz
Epox 4G4A+ Motherboard (845G chipset)
512 Mb ram
Geforce4 4200ti (128mb)
SB Audigy

The 4G4A+ has a realtek lan and hpt raid onboard, as well as intel sound and graphics (both the intel stuff is disabled)..

Any ideas,
Marky D

Can you try booting to a 1.2 CD? If that works, then you can swap CDs later to get the 1.4 information.

Not that I want to be rude but I already stated that the 1.2 boot disk also crashes....

However, I managed to find out what was happening. Apparently the newer kernels have problems with 845g's onboard graphics and it will not be able to detect the right about of memory.

Solution: Boot of a old 1.2 cd and append mem=480M (less that what I have 512M) to the boot flags.

Question: How can I download older gentoo kernel sources and compile them instead of the newer ones that do not work?

Ciao,
Mark

How old? gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r4 is still in the portage tree. You can pass the full filename to emerge to emerge any particular version you want.

 Open mouth, insert foot. You can check ibiblio to see what sources are available.

The 1.2 install CD uses gentoo-2.4.19-r7.

I have no problem booting from 1.4rc1 cd but my comp. p3-550 with chaintech 6btm 384mb ram mother hangs with openmosix and gentoo sources kernel. XP and RedHat 7.3 working without problem. Keyboard CapsLock and ScrollLock illuminating and totally freezed. CtrlAltDel does not work either. Vanilla kernel not tryed yet
Gentoo Kernel 2.4.19rc9 and openmosix 2.4.9rc7 I think.

Sorry my english
