I emerged xfree as well as fluxbox with no problems.
I changed XSESSION= to fluxbox
I added .xinitrc to my /home directory. Is that /home in root? hmm will have to check that. /home is mounted on a 4th partition on my setup.
when I try to startx I get this error:

ANy ideas? Is it not finding my config file? Or do I have an IO device driver problem Ie- my video card isnt setup right?

| hmmm...... forgive me if this sounds elemental, but did you run xf86config? and if so did you copy it from the directory your ran xf86config in, to the /etc/X11/ directory? Cause it just looks like its just not finding /etc/X11/XF86Config. hope this helps. |

My first xfree install here  
Missed that. Doing it now...well...redoing it again as I have a radeon 7500 and I can tell this is NOT going to be simple.
just had to hard reboot as my xf86config must have been wrong...had a funny looking screen and no mouse..no keys worked...nada

configure it manually 
run XFree86 -configure. your screen'll go blank and then the auto-generated config file will be on your home directory (run it as root.)
you can then go into the config file and change settings as needed.
alternatively, i think there's an XF86Setup app in portage that does a great job of auto-config'ing things. i used it alot in slackware before i knew how to edit my own config files
give that a shot.

I will give that a try as well. Seems I have X up and running now but only in Standard VGA with 256.

My guess now is I dont have the necessary drivers for my Radeon 7500. I did put "ati" in my USE=.
Once I get those I just need to edit my Section "Device" right?

I got X working...not sure about fluxbox yet.

that thread had the answer to my problem if anyone runs into the same thing.
I still can't start fluxbox by just typing it at the prompt. But I can get into X typing startx.
Loving Gentoo....can't believe how much I am learning...and how much is coming back after an almost 10 year hiatus from linux lol

As your user (not root) edit ~/.xinitrc to look like thisThat should get fluxbox up and running.
After you've emerged some other apps, you may want them to start automatically. Edit .xinitrc again to look something like | Code: | xterm &
gaim &
exec fluxbox |
All apps need to be before the exec fluxbox line and have an & at the end.

I know I am making alot of elementary mistakes here.
My .xinitrc file is in /home.
I can't edit it as anything but root.
When I edited as root and put in those commands I get:

.xinitrc is in the users directory, not just /home, correct? What are the permissions, owner & group on the users directory and the .xinitrc file?
