Cannot get Matrox G400 to run gdm

I am emerging a brand new system (new to gentoo, anyway).

I have Googled, been to XFree86.org, Matrox's site, have lots of documentation in front of me, but I do not see or do not understand the answer, so please bear with me...

I have been trying to get my Matrox G400 card to run XFree 4.2.1, gdm, and gnome. I can startx using xdm and tvm and run just fine.
When I change the values in my /etc/rc.conf to DISPLAYMANAGER=GDM and XSESSION=Gnome and reboot, I get a command line login prompt and then type startx.
The X-Server starts, gives me the *nice grey background, the cluncky X and then the Gnome splash window where you would normally see the different devices begin to initialize,
and then the X-Server abrubtly dies.

I am including the output of the X-Server (the whole thing, because I can't see anything that should cause the problem, sorry).

I am hoping that someone can see something that I am missing...

It occurs to me that there are a lot of problems in the forums related to XFree86.

I am going to try to down-rev to version 4.2.0-r12 and see what happens.

I have exactly the same problem U describe.. X is running and gdm is up .. trying to start gnome via gdm leads to the gnome startup screen initialising nothing and brake down after about 20sec .. so please post a solution if you find one ... i am searching too

Well it appears that unmerging gnome, gdm, and xfree86 4.2.1, emerging xfree86 4.2.0-r12, and re-emerging gdm and gnome did the trick.

After I get some other things working like sound and usb, I will attempt to upgrade to xfree 4.2.1 and see what happens.
