Few Problems

Good day,

I am having a few minor problems with my system.

I have a G4 350 (PCI Slot) 320 MB 10 G dedicated to Gentoo.

I also have OS 10.1 and 9.1 installed on my primary drive.

I was able to install Gentoo from the 1.2 CD without any problems.

I have installed te 2.4.19-r6 Kernel

1) My conf files were telling me to change the CFLAG for my CPU and altivec so I have changed it accordingly to the PPC Faq.

After this change, I could not emerge anything. It was telling me error in Line ... Could not compile.

When I put it back to its original state, the system works fine, and I can emerge.

My system has the altivec support but I beleive it had a G3 Board, with PCI slot, so I am not sure if that's the problem. How can I take advantage of my Altivec support ????

It says detected as Blue ad White G3 even though is it a Silver G4.....

Am I supposed to recompile the Kernel after making the changes to the make.conf ???


2) Sound does not work on KDE, aRts is giving me an error message:
Error while initializing the sound driver. Device /dev/dsp can<t br opened. (Nu such file or directory)

It is true the is no directory dsp in dev. I don't know what to do, I have folllowed the istructions in the PPC Faq.


3) I can't add a printer in KDE, this Icon is greyed out. CUPS is installed and KDE 3.0.4 is fully installed. I want to add an EPSON C40 UX USB Printer.

After Installing gimp, I can install a printer but the printer is not listed under USB even though I can see it on the Control Center of KDE.

4) I can not set my keyboard to French Canadian. The only language available is english. at fist, my Keyboard was giving me garbae sor I change the yaboot config so it would send linux keys, and it solved my problem ! But still no Ca Frech Keyboard.


Gentoo Rocks, Long live Gentoo.

I have tried Debian for PPC and it never worked. (Potato and Woody)

Gentoo is the best Dist.

If anyone can help me out I AM A NEWBIE at Linux (anyways)
