This is the sort of question you can't ask on the Pan users mailinglist, because they'd go: "What? That's what we love most about it!" and declare this bug a feature without thinking twice.

Can somebody please tell me how to remove just the anal portion of the User Agent header that identifies Pan versions? I'd like to keep the Pan reference (helps me keep remember from which PC I posted something), but after the version number the current release claims that everything is funny until someone immanentizes the Eschaton, which besides being a butchered Robert A. Wilson classic is completely inappropriate as a statement by a mere newsreader client software. Don't whistle while you pee, if you know what I mean.

And the first person going fnord in response to this will be sent to bed without dinner. :twisted:

I dunno if this is a good suggestion for you or not ( not a Pan user ), but considered reviewing the source? If there's a configurable way to do it, it should be in there. If not, just remove it and recompile. :-P I'm surprised how few people do this kind of thing when faced with an error message / trivial modification... I thought it was the best part of Open Source. :-)

Code:
 /* user-agent */
 if (!gtk_toggle_button_get_active(GTK_TOGGLE_BUTTON(mw->hide_user_agent_tb)))
            g_mime_message_set_header (message, "User-Agent", "Pan/" VERSION " (" VERSION_TITLE ")");

Bad news for you I'm afraid. Without modifying the code, it's all or nothing.

You could redefine VERSION_TITLE in "configure" to rid yourself of this insult to the Illuminati.

Looks like you should be able to download a tarball, modify it, then use the modified tarball.

To complicate things, you could make your own ebuild as well.

For extra credit, you could try adding a patch.

Yeah, well, that does it. Hope you weren't hungry, anyway. :P

Thanks for all the genteel assistance by you code-divers out there. I will accept the challenge and modify my first piece of software. If I'm posting from KNode in the future, you'll know why.

Don't spit on the floor. 8)
