hi,
i just installed gentoo and everything worked fine.
i only have trouble with grub, which is not able to boot my old win xp.
i use this settings:
hda1: boot, ext3, 100MB
hda2: windows, ntfs, 8 GB
hda3: swap, 1 GB
hda4: linux, ext3, 30 GB
there is no problem with booting linux.
to boot win xp, i use the following commands:
title=Windows XP
root (hd0,1)
chainloader +1
the error message is: "Filesystem type unkown, partition type 0x7".
i also tried rootnoverify instead of root and makeactive, but it didn't work.
there is no error message when using rootnoverify (logo!). it just hangs up after chainloader +1.
i don't think that the win xp partition is damaged, i was able to read the files.
has anyone an idea how to fix this???
why is ntfs unknown to grub?
thanks for every hint,
with kind regards form switzerland

Have you tried [usr=http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/help.html]this[/url] site:

One of the key components of dual booting inferior OS's is their insistance on using the first drive/partition to boot. Grub allows you to perform a little slight of hand, and *bam*, the emperor has new clothes.... _________________ Mike
