hi my gentoo box, is very slow. (xp3200+ 512mbram 7200rpm hdd) .
i installed gentoo linke it was described in the gentoo install tutorial.
later i added some packages. now i have a computer with gentoo and one with suse 9.1 .
the suse 9.1 box which has the same hware is double so fast as the gentoo box. what i have made wrong ?

yes. if i open konqueror it takes a while, until it is started. (1.5seconds)
on this suse box it is started, after 0.3 seconds.
the suse is a fresh installed sys and my gentoo is a little bigger, but that's a little bit long i think. are there benchmarks for testing linux systems for speed ? thanks a lot 
here my hdparm config : hdparm -d 1 -X udma4/2 (i tested both)

Have you enabled DMA in the kernel?
What does hdparam /dev/hdX and hdparam -i /dev/hdX say. X is the drive you want to look at.
The * appears next to the data transfer mode in use.
PIO modes are slow and CPU intensive, DMA is faster and frees the CPU for other things.

There's an option in KDE for preloading konqueror on KDE startup. This could account for konq starting faster on Suse. However, i had the same problem. My gentoo installation is much slower then my slackware, which puzzles me somewhat. I'm beginning to think it may have something to do with my optimization settings and use-flags, but i don't think i will ever find out.
Make sure your kernel has all the right stuff in it. and try to find a nice patchset. I'm using the love-sources right now, which really make your kernel rock like ninja!

What is your RAM situation and what kernel are you running? Using 2.6.6, I felt a large increase in "interactice" performance by lowering /proc/sys/vm/swappiness from 60 to 30. This is because the kernel is now less likely to swap stuff to disk, which improves the responsiveness. |

you need to put your computer name in /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost yourcomputername
That should speed kde/konquerer up a lot |

What is content of your /etc/hosts exactly?
Is the slowness only in kde or also in other window manager/non-kde apps? |
