First of all, some games have Linux clients, this means that you can play them withou using winex, and you will have much better performance. Some fps games that have Linux clients are Quake 3, Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournament.
Wine is a program which can be used to run Windows apps on Linux (ordinary apps, not games). If you want to run Windows games you need Winex, which is basically Wine with DirectX support. Bad news: Winex it is not free. Good news: you can get it legally from cvs (this being winex-cvs), you can use some scripts for this. Do a bit of googling and you will easily find a script.

Is it possible that you are trying to start it as root?
If you are: exit, become a normal user and do "armyops" (It should be enough without any cd before..)

Or in general: become the user, who owns this X-Session. (The one as whom you are logged into kde or whatever.) I think his name is in the $USER env-variable -> "echo $USER"

Perhaps you are not in the "games" group...
Open "/etc/groups" as root and edit the line:
Quote:
games:x:35:

to
Quote:
games:x:35:USERNAME

Where USERNAME is the username of the user you want to run the game as...

After that "whereis armyops" should give you something like:
"armyops: /usr/games/bin/armyops"

Another question:
Are you allowed to access /usr/games ?
Is armyops in really a subdirectory? (Normaly there are only a few startup scripts inside /usr/games/bin, the real gamefiles are in normaly in /opt/GAMENAME)

I don't have armyops, so I can only give you general help and need information about the files etc. from you..)

i found this page http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=26
and i started to installing cvswinex..

i typed.. "sh GetCVSWineX resp" and installation started.. after few seconds there comes error..
Code:
GetCVSWineX - Progress(u) : Green is current

   0 = Uninstall
   1 = Cleanup
   2 = CVS checkout
   3 = Configure
   4 = Make depend
   5 = Make
   6 = Make install
   7 = Finish up

-------------------------------------------

Checking out CVS ... May take a while

--------- Error log - file /root/temp/cvswinex/ErrorLog : ---------
/root/bin/GetWineX: line 1249: cvs: command not found

Error in CVS checkout

Try fixing the error based on the output above, and
run the script again, without paramaters (Eg: GetCVSWineX)

why not just "emerge wine" ? would that not do it ? you will get the source and it will start compiling. the latest version is 20040408.

please check out:

when i emerge wine, it gives me an old version (20040121). I thought i might get a better version by picking up the files off of wines website.

for most games you dont need winex, winex is meant for direct3d games, when using opengl (95% of the windows games that run with wine/winex) wine is the better choice.

sgaap: I thought the same, but then heard that the present wine is broken for games...
(I tried HL and SMAC and they won't work, so I think this is correct...)

it looks as though you have not installed your 3d drivers if you have then you have not changed your XF86Config or you have not told nvidia.o to load when system boots

do "opengl-update ati"
And "fglrxconfig" as root could be usefull, if you are using ati-drivers...
It asks you some questions and sets up a working config...
