I accidentally deleted /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit. AHHH. Now I can't start X.

when I enter "startx" I get an error saying cannnot execute binary file

I did an emerge sync, emerge gnome annd redid xf86config annd none of it worked. xf86config won't even save the file

How do I fix it?

Scott

did you try exec gnome-session. Tho that sounds like it wont work.

you might need to unmerge XF86 first
then merge say 4.2.1 ....

Looks like you'll have to re-install XFree86

Whoops :(

I always found the command XFree -configure better than xf86config.

XFree -configure will try to autodetect your hardware and create a XF86Config in your /root dir. Then after just edit to add you resolution screen. Sometimes you need to specify the Hsync and Vsync but becareful with this use your monitor specification for that.

When you think your config file is good to go try the following

XFree -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new to see if you can see any error while loading X. If its ok just copy the file to /etc/X11/XF86Config and startx.

Good luck

I tried the XFree -configure but all I get is a "no such file or diretory" error

How can I completely dump every thing from the documentation guide (i.e. gnome, KDE, Xfree86) so I can reinstall all of it. The must be some other file that is killing the whole process becaue before i screwed up the xinit file X worked fine
