I am having trouble getting X to start

I got into the desktop configuration guide after I got the system to boot.

I did an "emerge kde" twice but they both failed to build to id did and "emerge gnome" and it built OK after two hours.

This after noon I entered "/usr/X11R6/xf86config" and congifured my monitor and video card. I have a Matrox Millenium G450. It was not in the database so I selected a Matrox Millenium G400 and adjusted the settings for the G450.

After i finished I entered "startx" and got a no such file or directory error

So I entered "/usr/X11R6/bin/startx" It returned

/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xauth: command not found
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xauth: command not found
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xauth: command not found
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xauth: command not found
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xinit: command not found
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx: xauth: command not found

I can enter "ls /usr/X11R6/bin" and the files are there so what is gong wrong.

Hmm... it sounds as if your XFree86 failed to emerge correctly... possibly.

More accurately, it sounds like Xfree's junk wasn't added to your path. Did you try to log out and then in... or [gasp] reboot?

Iassume you mean /usr/X11R6/Bin/xf86config and ran through the X configuration exercise.

You may just want to try a restart.

Check to see if you have an /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

Perhaps X doesn't like your modified card settings.

did you logout and log back in after emerging X? or source /etc/profile? I think you need to do this in order to refresh your PATH variable so that it looks in you XFree bin directory. it could also be the source of your other problems.

try emerge -s WindowMaker then emerge WindowMaker.

Well depend on what you would like if you want a light wm go and look at Fluxbox, WindowMaker, openbox, blackbox ... etc or if you want more like windows go for kde or gnome but they use too much ressource for my taste.

try and see which one you like. I was windowmaker and I switch to Fluxbox.

also, I think there is a current problem with KDE 3.0.4 and one of the latest packages, can't remember which one right now... Anyway, supposedly there is a work-a-round to get KDE 3.0.4 to compile. You could always unmask 3.1beta and install that instead. I hear it's pretty neat.

I don't recall any problems emerging KDE 3.0.4, but speaking of 3.1, I see from http://www.kde.org/info/3.1.html that it is now up to RC1 (but no ebuild yet - it was only released yesterday!). I read somewhere that the full release was scheduled for early November, but I don't know if that's still true or not.

EDIT: RC2 is scheduled for next Monday according to http://dot.kde.org/.
