I'm trying to install the easy way...this time. I have a Stage-3 Live CD and got as far as Code Listing-2 in Configuring the Kernel.
Having followed the instructions to the best of my ability...I entered "emerge vanilla-sources". (Perhaps I should have used sparc-sources.) Things started to happen and it all looked good...until it tried going out on the net. It's not connected to the net. That's why I was trying to install from CD. Anyway I got repeated failures and finally an abort.
The online documents say "If you are installing Gentoo without a working network connection you will need to use vanilla-sources or sparc-sources". Why did it try for the network connection rather than the CD? |

Try copying the kernel sources from the distfiles directory on the cdrom to /usr/portage/distfiles. If it still doesn't install, you could always just manually untar the file into /usr/src, that's all the vanilla-sources does anyways. |
