the speed looks promising (runed several times on a T1)

gcc-3.3.3

real 0m20.960s
user 0m20.350s
sys 0m0.590s

# time gzip -d messages.gz

real 0m3.329s
user 0m1.920s
sys 0m1.410s

gcc-3.4.0

Code:

$ time gzip -9 messages

real 0m20.075s
user 0m19.680s
sys 0m0.380s

$ time gzip -d messages.gz

real 0m3.200s
user 0m1.810s
sys 0m1.340s

an emerge system compiled almost every package except glibc,
