|
|
I am getting a SPARC server ina few days/weeks and i am tryin to do some research on them. Is there anything i should know before i try linux on it? Advantages/Disadvantages to x86? Whats good about them? Whats bad about them? How do they run as a server (good/bad/slow/fast)? How does Gentoo run on it? What about Slackware Linux? I will be choosing one or the other unless other wise directed....i know this is the Gentoo forums and Gentoo rocks but i thought id ask newayz.

It's a fairly nice system. Will run Gentoo fine. |

Look here http://sunsolve.sun.com/ for Sun hardware docs.
Big difference is that sparcs are slow compared to your 10Thz Pentium 9 but it is more stable, better balanced/tuned system

At home I use both Slackware and Gentoo, and to be honest Gentoo on the sparc architecture is much much better supported than Slackware/splack.
So if I were you, I'd go with Gentoo
Very nice system btw |

Out of interest, what are you getting the server for?
Do you have a specific job in mind? _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--

I am interested in the differances and its faster than what i got and i always like to learn about new technology (well to me atleast). I also plan on replacing my current server once i get the Sparc up to speed. Does that help? _________________ www.EternalFireProof.com

Yes, its good to see, and feel the differences between platforms. I have SPARC machines, and HP/9000 ones and they all have different feels to them.
Have fun! _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--
