I'm getting the old VFS unable to mount root error when booting from the 2004.1 CD. What Sparc64 systems booted from it?

It sees my hardware as it is booting. It grabs the CMD IDE controller, sees the DVD drive and the hard drive. The HD is on /dev/hda and the dvd drive is on /dev/hdc

I'm trying to repair a bad silo so I needed something to start it from.

I have exactly the same problem with an Ultra 10.
Is there a workaround or some thing else for this problem?

If anyone else here has access to a serial null modem cable, can they post the dmesg output from their Ultra 10? (Or other failing system)

I know the original post was regarding 2004.1 CD and I still have the same problem noted earlier.

Just to see....downloaded the minimal 2004.0 iso and was able to boot no problem.

If I find my null modem cable, I will send the dmesg output.

I was able to have some luck getting rid of a kernel panic problem by running the OBP diagnostic tests (OBDiag). Running those cleared out whatever was causing the fault and the kernel panic went away immediately. I believe the command at the OK prompt was "test all". Then afterward, I did a "reset-all". That seemed to do the trick. YMMV.

I tried the test-all (passed with no errors) and then reset-all....unfortunately same result.

thanks,

They're going to need some dmesgs. Connect a serial cable and copy the kernel output and paste it in here.

2004.0 also worked for me. This is my first install of Gentoo ( I'm switching from Debian), so I'm going to run with it. However, I'll test any new fixes to verify it on my machine.

For users having problems, can you try the ISOs at http://dev.gentoo.org/~gustavoz/sparc/ ?
This are exactly the same as the released 2004.1 ones, with the exception that they're based on an older SILO version.
Post your success/failure stories in Bug #50256.
Thanks.
