Hi,
my problem is easy to explain but probably more difficult to fix:
I wrote this as root: (not very clever I guess)
chmod -R 777 /var
and that kinda screwed my system up slightyly... I cant login as root and I cant really do much at all... I was wondering if I have to reinstall or if I can just use the install CD to get back root access and change the chmod for the different sub directories in /var manually?
hm.. Im very new to this,
please help..

these are my permissions (on a mandrake box at the moment):

drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 aug 8 16:43 var/
|
I think the best thing to do is to boot from the gentoo cdrom (or any bootdisk with support for your filesystem) and chmod /var again to the right permissions.

Ill try to do that but the thing is that I need the permissions for all the sub folders of /var
what a hassle huh? :\
