|
|
After installing Gentoo and compiling a kernel, etc I rebooted. Now my system hangs part way through the boot process. I am guessing I screwed up with some kernel options...
a) What is the best way to recover and recompile a new kernel?
b) I could use the kernel that came with the Gentoo boot CD but I cannot find what file it is. Can anybody tell me what the file name is and where it is located on the 1.4 CD? Then I could copy it to /boot/working_kernel and get Grub to boot that.
Thanks
/b
PS: Gentoo is the best distro I have tried so far. Keep rocking. |

I'm having the same kind of problem...where is your install locking ?
"uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xbf80, IRQ 11"
is the last line that I see....I'm using a Dell Inspiron 4150 (laptop)....if it locks in the middle of booting, then its probably a kernel build problem...I just don't know what I did wrong...I used the gentoo kernel...I'll give that another go, and if that doesn't work then I'll switch to a vanilla one...

The filename itself is '.config'. As in, /usr/src/linux/.config _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Here's the link to a CD .config file. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I got the .config file from the URL listed above and downloaded a vanilla kernel. It compiles and now I have a booting machine. Now to get my network up and running.
Thanks for the help.

I actually did some forum searching and came across something that said leaving SMP enabled leads to the kernel not being able to boot.
So I disabled it, and recompiled and all was good....I think that's why the vanilla-sources will work and the gentoo ones won't sometimes...
Just throwing that out for y'all
