“The system is going down for halt NOW!" shows up when I attempt to compile a large package. It did it when I tried to emerge opera, mozilla-firefox, and samba. I haven't tried much else, but I have successfully emerged fluxbox, xmms, and aterm. I'm thinking my system may be getting too hot or something of that nature? I'm running a 2.2 P4 laptop with 768ram and kernel 2.6.5. The fan spins up like crazy when it starts compiling. Is there any way to alleviate this problem or tell the compiler to use fewer clock cycles? Anyone else run into this?

Sounds like it's overheating to me. cpufreqd may be able to help you; you certainly need to clock your processor down though.
