KDM has an option to restart the X server (that's X-windows itself, not the whole system). Is it possible to get such an option in GDM?

just do ctrl+alt+backspace.

That doesn't work very well on remote X terminals. (it either does nothing or restarts the terminal's copy of X, not the remote copy).
