Hate to see Daniel go. He originated by-far the BEST Linux distro on the planet. I wish him all the luck and hope the best for him in the future.

This distro made me leave winblows forever. I already got my brother hocked and working on getting my other brothers and sisters hocked.

Best of Luck Daneil.

Can we have a 'get Robbins out of Debt' fund setup, seperate from gentoo's current fund raising activities with the sole purpose of making a dent in the $20K (or whatever it may be) amount he has outstanding.

The way I understand it (that Daniel gets the profits from the store) you're going to be better off using this link which is a "donation" product on the store. The donation button on gentoo.org goes towards paying for the move to NFP rather than Daniel.

As I said in the other thread, there's no need for another fund. Both the donations through the paypal account on the front page and through the Store go to Daniel directly:
Quote:
> The question remains: Will you be taking the paypal
> donations with you as was agreed upon with the store, "to
> support me and my family in our ability to cover _basic
> living expenses_, and *potentially* help pay off *some*
> (notice I did use the word *some* in my original email)
> accumulated debt." or will the paypal donations feed the
> Gentoo project through the new NFP?

At some point, there will only be a NFP to donate to.

In the mean time, if I can't cover basic living expenses and have a basic
standard of living, then I suppose I could use some of the donation money to
support my family so I can continue to run the store, or I could shut down
the store and quickly try to get a job.

While the store is running, the donations will go towards NFP-related
expenses that I am planning on covering via the Store. If not this, then if
absolutely necessary towards the store itself so it can keep running. If the
Store is shut down or the Store doesn't need the money, then it could go
towards the NFP's operating budget, but only after the NFP's legal expenses
have been paid off.

The profits from the store contribute to living expensises (etc), I am requesting a specific short-run fund that targets the debt and only the debt.

I dont know the circumstances of the loan(s), but if they are of the monthly repayment kind reducing the headline amount will make the biggest difference to the monthly income the Robbins family have at their disposal.

Its about making the best use of community goodwill upon his departure.

Daniel,

You're paypal account has been slashdotted! ;-)

It's worth a $55 donation for a windows uninstaller

Good luck in anything you do, but please don't go too far.

There is allready an installer project on it's way http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/installer/index.xml, that should be an optional way to install gentoo in a more userfriendly way.

We will certainly not allow gentoo to die though.

I just bought a 2 CD 2004.0 CD sets, one for me and one for my gf.

I appreciate that this is a turbulent time right now, mods, devs and other gentoo officials probably know very little too, but some concrete advice would be appreciated.

I mean, I am pretty sure that my money has gone (or mostly gone) to Mr Robbins himself (as the CDs were bought from the Gentoo Store), but i am not certain as a lot of what i've read could be heresay.

Site Admins, Mods: How bout a sticky explaining what users should do should they wish to contribute to easing Mr Robbins' debt, and the best ways to do so?

As i said, i appreciate that mods and admins may know only as much as what users know so thanks in advance :)

Well this is some shitty news... I wish D. Robbins the best, and once the dust settles on how I can donate to him, i'll be doing so.

As mentioned above, use the gentoo store.

Suppose this is as good a place as any for me to wish drobbins all the best in the future. I also look forward to the time ahead, gentoo is becoming more than just one man's dream, and I'm certain that gentoo will go on to become even better than it already is.

To those of you that were worried about gentoo collapsing as drobbins has left...sheesh, have some faith. :-D

I guess that Daniel's resignation came out of the blue for most of the developers, let alone users. While I'm not Daniel, I have some idea about why Daniel decided to retire. There are actually a number of points:
  • The distribution has gotten so big that it is hard for any single person to make a difference. Daniel himself got more involved with all kinds of boring "paperwork" than with actual development, while that is what he likes.
  • There is allways a minority of developers and active users that question everything. This induced Daniel to a feeling there is nothing he can do well. Most of the questioning is actually out of ignorance, but it still hurts
  • Daniel has been working at least 80 hours per week on gentoo. This is too much and he shouldn't be needed to do so much
  • For 4 years now, Daniel has been working from home, only having contact with people by IRC/e-mail, and occasionally by phone. This is getting lonely and extremely stressfull as these modes of communication have serious issues.
  • Most developers work only part-time on gentoo in their spare hours. As such things cannot go as fast as they would when people were developing full time. As Daniel has been developing more than fulltime this got quite frustrating.

Ok cool, just wanted to make sure that if I donated through the store, that the money would end up in the right hands. Thanks.

I had no idea that he had such a debt because of Gentoo.
I'll donate as soon as I get home.

Thanks, Daniel! Gentoo is the best distro I know.
I wish you all the best, and hope your debt vanishes quickly :)

Except I'm "only" 15 and have no cash. Follow me for a day and you'll see me spen $2 on lunch and that's it. Then again, I've never bitched about the store, either. ;)

I have a hard time seeing gentoo dying too, but in my honest opp. gentoo won't be that same after this. Larry just lost his father.

Almost everything I love about Gentoo and for me differentiates it from other linux distros came from the mind of Robbins, I think it would be a bit naive to think its business as usual for gentoo after this.

I hope this doesn't come off wrong, I'm confident that all the talented developers on this project will be able maintain Gentoo just fine. But still a creative guy like Robbins would be missed from any project, especially a project which he had the "original" road-map for.

This is a sad day for Gentoo Linux

I wish the best of luck to all of the devs on gentoo and best of luck to Daniel Robbins in the future.
