This just came in on the gentoo-dev mailing list:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=gentoo-dev&m=108301354923344&w=2

Thats a a surprise to me. I hope there wasnt something too wrong. I hope the fog around the reason will clear up a bit ...

Edit: This evolved into a donation thread the after fog cleared ...
Lets make a good farewell present for DRobbins - he deserves it.
We wont make it easy for you to leave us, Daniel ...

I hope it's on good terms. It would be a shame if he were leaving due to some bad situation or some disagreement.

When the going gets tough, blame it on SCO.

Seriously though I too hope its not in bitter taste but rather in good will.

drobbins is gone. There will be a more formal announcement once things have settled a bit and it can be presented properly.

Gentoo will not die. Part of the reason for his leaving is that once Gentoo goes NFP, there will be a board of directors which will take over governance.

But can't he be head of said board of directors, instead of just resigning before anything goes on?

Wow. This is pretty bad. I guess now with the board of developers, it won't be that much of a restructure, but... why would he leave?
He's been the head of Gentoo for so long, and given so much to help us all.
So why leave?

I guess that's his descision though, but I think we'll miss him.
[edit] and oh, btw, we just got slashdotted. Seems like even Slashdot is sad that he's leaving.

I think this pretty much covers every reason he's leaving, a mixture of personal issues and being sick of side-stepping FUD:

This news just hit the front page of slashdot;
Daniel Robbins resigns as Chief Gentoo Architect
so I imagine the news will spread pretty quickly now (it's how I heard of it, after all)

I can't say I know Daniel personally, as I'm just a gentoo user. However, this past year, I've really taken to gentoo. All my boxes run it (including several at work!) and I'm teaching three other people how to admin linux with it.

It's safe to say that he has been the key to making gentoo what it is today, and I for one greatly appreciate the hard work he's put into it.

I really hope that this does turn out to be just a sabbatical, or at most a reduction in workload and change in personal direction, while still staying part of the gentoo community.

Whatever happens though, I'd at least like to thank him for everything he's done to bring his creation to what it is today - the best damn tool in the box.

Just wanted to put in a note of thanks and appreciation to Daniel for creating the best Linux distribution out there.

I hope he will be able to stay involved with Gentoo in an advisory capacity of some sort.

Yeah, Gentoo will die instantly and we won't have an OS of choice in the near future.
I really liked his interviews, but I can't believe that this will do any harm to the community.
Farewell drobbins!

I don't see that happening instantly or for a long while.

I don't think Gentoo will die, although it will be different. Hopefully a different head won't decide to make a GUI installer or anything. I think Gentoo can survive, easily or not.

were people really bitching about him getting profits from the store, jesus when i heard he was $20,000 in debt i thought we should have had a fundraiser like they did for that *bsd hacker.
not only has he created a great distro but also written some great articles on the ibm developerworks site, at least i hope he gets a great job, got to be a good thing to have on a cv.

Well said. I also wish to deeply thank Daniel Robbins for his hard work and dedication in making one of, if not the, best linux distros out there.

Yea. I honestly love Gentoo's install process, granted it does take longer.

Oh yes. With the community support that Gentoo has, it will most certainly survive. Besides, didn't he still want to be a lead release director of some sort?
