Here is the situation.
KDE installed fine
On boot:
1. I login
2. 'Startx'
3. then two or three bashwindows pop up and I type 'Startkde'
here's the problem...everything..and I mean EVERYTHING is a window.
Even the KDE desktop is in a window...If I minimize it takes desktop icons with it..
How can I configure the system to have KDE FULL-screen, like red-hat and mandrake...well basically EVERY other distro I've used
Obviously with no offense to anyone, I really dislike the window setup...confusing more than anything else, plus the fact that an outline of the window follows your mouse until you click where you want it..that is also annoying.
I just want to have a plain desktop without bas windows etc to worry me...
what do I do...
I can't get gnome to work at all ....hopefully someone can point me in hte right direction as I emerge'd gnome but now am lost on how to proceed....
Is there anyway I can get a Window manager choice as well?
THanks....
<---frustrated newbie...
P.S> it took me 10+ INSTALLS TO GET ME FAR....don't you DARE leave me hanging... |

If you are starting X from the promp mayby just try "kdm" (it's even shorter then startx ) |

Set your default windowmanager (XSESSION variable) in /etc/rc.conf to start kde
This is done by the following line (assuming that you are using kde-3.0.3)
XSESSION=kde-3.0.3 _________________ I heard if you play the XP CD backwards, you get a satanic message. Thats nothing compared to what happens if you play it forward - then it installs Windows XP |

You can also create a .xinitrc file in your $HOME directory and stick "exec startkde" in there.
I've seen this question MANY times before. A search might have answered it much faster. |

Yeah edit /etc/rc.conf to match your KDE version in /etc/X11/Sessions.
Then to activate it you'll have to run this "rc-update add xdm default"
And no, this is not a mistake. I was confused too but thats what you need to do since xdm is the script. |

Not exactly sure what you're asking. But this might clear things up... X-Windows is a graphical environment. It does all the drawing and hardware talking. You are then running KDE on top of that. KDE is a desktop environment. It does all the icons and has many libraries for different apps to use to interact with this environment. KDE also has it's own window manager to deal with the actual windows (I think it's called KWin or KWM or something). This window manager deals with window positions and sizes, minimization, and things of that nature.
Anyone please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken on anything. |

Well, when you ran startx and saw those three xterm windows, with the ugly olive-green title-bar colors, that's the default window manager that comes with Gentoo's XFree86, the old-school TWM (tabbed window manager). What you were seeing was the KDE desktop environment with a window manager that doesn't play nicely with KDE.
It works, but it's not very usable in that manner. What you want to do is take any of the three suggestions given above (1-changing the XSESSION variable, 2-creating your own ~/.xinitrc file and having 'exec startkde' in there, or 3-changing the display manager to kdm and adding xdm to your startup scripts using rc-update), so that KDE loads up properly with its own window manager variant. |

I have the problem that an xterm window appears after I log and I must type startkde. Problem is each time I log in kde there is another xterm window. I changed my xsession variable in rc.conf and change rc.conf to use kdm did rc-update add xdm default and it did not solve the problem. I don't know what an .xinitrc file I try putting one but it didnt do anything. I do I get rid of those Xterm windows and not having to use startkde ? |
