edit: so i am using ymessenger andit seems like its going to do the file transfer thing , BUT i can send NOT recieve.....why are all these IM programs not able to ahndle this feature...is it that much of a programmers nightmare?

With kopete you can CTRL+ENTER to send the message, no need for a mouse click.

As for file transfers, I'm using LICQ 1.2.0a with kde support (from bugzilla commited ebuild), and it seems capable of handling file transfers (haven't tried it yet).

Seems like it is the most feature complete ICQ client around.

By default mirabilis icq clients refuse to directly connect to older protocol icq clients. Sending a file obviously needs a direct connection. This means you can't send or receive files using licq and a mirabilis client _unless_ you get the person using the mirabilis client to do this: main->security and privacy->peer to peer connection-> untick "do not allow peer to peer connection with previous icq software versions". Then it works fine.

From which version is it considered older :?: licq's FAQ states that it supports most of 2000 (v8) protocol.

licq identifies itself as a protocol version 6 client so it's considered an "old" client by the mirabilis client and direct connections aren't allowed by default. Kopete or kxicq2 on the other hand identify themselves as version 7 clients and therefore work fine for direct connections with mirabilis clients.

The licq FAQ says it support most of ver 8 protocol. How can one check how it identifies itself (protocol wise) :?:

Run licq on one computer and open up the network window. Then run licq on another computer with it on the contact list of the first computer and you'll see the protocol version listed for all the clients in the contact list.

Just thought I would let you know (in case you hadn't figured it out yet) that in the preferences for kopete you can tell it to have a "single line chat-box".

This will make it send the message when you press enter - this is how I use it because that is the way most of the windows chat programs work.

Kopete does rock my ass for sure!

I'm sticking to gaim for my ICQ use. Not only that, I can use it for aim/msn/yahoo just in case.

I ran Licq for like 3 years or so ever since I started using Linux but it just gotten a bit awkward recently. So a quick jump to gaim put my faith back.

SIM is really neato...same look&feel as the Windows client, pretty much, and yes, it handles file transfer pretty well... And the on-screen notification makes it even better... Supports most feature of the latest protocole, even some of the weirder ones... I really love it

Personaly, if SIM existed for Windows, I'd use it there too...

I tried SIM, but it kept crashing my KDE.. Switched to KXicq2 and haven't had a problem since...

I dunno if thats it, but for SIM, I had problems back then when I didnt have Open GL setup properly (no need to be accelerated...it just does some nifty things with the screen that need OGL or something).

Otherwise, it messes up quite badly while looking for the librairies, hehe...

Yeah, noone mentions KXicq2! It's great man! And has file sending support, although I haven't tested it though.
Besides that it behaves much like the origina ICQ 98 which I like most and als support serverside contactlists.

Code:
emerge -p kopete

These are the packages that I would merge, in order.

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R  ] net-im/kopete-0.4.1

0.5 is out?

cheers

IIRC sim 0.8 should be out next week as well. Copying and modifying the exisiting ebuild is quite easy.

Sim is a great client.

It's out but not in portage yet, and no ebuild in bugzilla - but it should be as easy as renaming the old ebuild - if not mail me and I'll get on with the ebuilding.

-update-

It's in portage - but do to the foolishness of the ebuild system it does not show up in packages.mask - it uses the KEYWORD ~ operant... I know this is better than masking globally as we can freeze a package on bases of arch. --- but PLEASE, do at least make a note in package.mask
