ok i've had gentoo running soundly on my Ultra5 for about 6 months now, so i guess i decided im keeping it.
one thing i haven't figured out:
linux boots up with the old fancy black font on white command line screen like the original Solaris install had (=lousy framebuffer, screen fragments, and white screensaver). how do i get that back to the normal linux white text on black? it worked that way by default on my first install, but i screwed that up, started over from scratch and got the white instead. is that a SILO config?
X and openbox are installed and run great, but 99% of the time i have it in command line which is quite eye straining the way it is |

You'll want to enable framebuffer support for the ATI Mach64 cards in your kernel config. That should provide the results you want. |
