|
|
I messed up while trying to add somethigng to my $PATH,
now when I echo $PATH, it tells me
/usr/X11R6/bin:/etc/profile/:/etc/profile:
this is really F'd because when I try to do an "ls" it says "bash: ls: command not found"
1. how do I clean out the $PATH and make a fresh start.
2. what should be in the $PATH to start with.. |

Where did you make the changes to your path? If you just did it in the shell with "export", just log out and log in again to get a new one. I think "source /etc/profile" should help you out.
As to what's supposed to be in your path, the defaults should be fine, unless you've got something special in mind. Normal users usually have /bin/, /usr/bin/, /usr/local/bin/, $HOME/bin/. Root will also have sbin, and probably not the /usr/local stanza.
Does this help?
