I have the oppurtunity to obtain an AlphaServer 1000, I know it is really old hardware but what is the relative performance like?
I'm looking to obtain the Compaq compilers with the hobbyist licence and try out some FORTRAN codes on a 64bit platform.
I'm not expecting much but will it seem dog slow at some numerical stuff when compared to some old x86 hardware (Althon 600MHz)?

There's some tech docs on that system over here:
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/systems/as1000/docs/tech_summ.pdf

That's an Alpha 21064@266 MHz:
SPECint95 4.34
SPECfp95 6.03

I don't think it's going to keep up with an Athlon@600MHz (http://www.spec.org):
SPECint95 27.2
SPECfp95 21.5

So I suppose the answer to your question is: Yes!

Marnix.

Thanks Marnix.

I had stumbled over the tech docs before, but the SPEC benchmark information was what I was really looking for.

I'll probably take the machine for a play box anyhow, even though it will be useless for most calcs.
